Springs: Look for gaps, rust, or signs of stretching. Torsion springs are mounted above the door; extension springs run along the horizontal tracks.
Cables: Check for fraying or loose strands. Never touch cables under tension — they carry enormous force.
Rollers: Look for chips, cracks, or worn edges on metal or nylon rollers.

Weatherstripping: Inspect the rubber seal along the bottom of the door for cracks, gaps, or brittleness.

Listen During Operation

Test the Auto-Reverse Safety Feature

Place a 2x4 board flat on the floor in the door’s path. Close the door using the opener. The door should reverse immediately upon contacting the board. If it doesn’t, the force settings need adjustment or the safety mechanism needs repair. This test takes 30 seconds and could prevent a serious injury.

Test the Photo-Eye Sensors

Wave an object through the photo-eye beam (located about 6 inches off the floor on each side of the door) while the door is closing. The door should stop and reverse. Every 3-4 Months: Lubrication

Bearing plates — at the top of the door

The vibration from daily operation loosens bolts and brackets over time. Using a socket wrench, tighten:

Roller brackets
Hinge bolts
Opener mounting brackets
Track mounting bolts

Don’t overtighten — snug is sufficient. Overtightening can strip threads or crack brackets.

Annually: Check Door Balance

Disconnect the opener by pulling the emergency release cord. Lift the door manually to about waist height and let go. A properly balanced door will stay in place, rising or falling no more than a couple of inches.

If the door falls or rises significantly, the springs need adjustment. Spring adjustment is dangerous and should only be done by a trained technician — the tension involved can cause serious injury.
